Saturday At State College

If you want to read about Sunday, read the post following this one.

It sure wasn't my usual quiet weekend. But it got me out of my rut and that's always a good thing. I was supposed to drive down to Havre de Grace, MD last Sunday to see Olivia play rugby. Halfway there, she called to say not to come as she wasn't going to play. For some reason, I listened to her and came back home. Turned out she not only played but scored, as well.

Saturday, her team went up to State College, PA. That's home to Penn State. A very large college up in the mountains about 2 1/2 hours from here. Phyllis was working and couldn't go. A good thing as it turned out. I chose to go. Silly me. I followed the directions that are posted on the other team's web site. It and my GPS agreed. Got there fine. Oops. No rugby playing going on there. The only thing I saw was a boy's baseball game. It was a middle school and not that big a campus that you couldn't see all of it in short order. The phone # give to call if you were lost just went to the guy's voice mail. Olivia was warming up about then and couldn't hear her phone.

Just before the 2pm game time, she called to say they were at State College. Uh huh. Not only is State College the name of the town, but everything around there carries the same name. I decided that they might be at State College High School. Plugged that into the GPS and took off. Got there and there were about 20 buses and hundreds of cars. Oh no! Turned out to be a state lacrosse (or something like it) playoff going on there. Now what? I had to potty rather desperately, so I looked for a McDonald's in the GPS. Found one nearby. Ahh. After that, I went back to the high school and parked in the lot. I thought I might hear from Olivia at some point.

Between games, she called to tell me they were some place called Port Matilda. A port in central PA? A check in the GPS told me it was so and that it was 12 miles from where I was. Intrepid me took off. The only park I could find there was a small community park containing a few families playing on the playground equipment and a couple of fisherman wetting their lines in the picturesque stream that ran thru it. No rugby players.By this time, I was extremely frustrated. The only reason I was still up in the area was because Olivia was supposed to ride home with me.

After the Port Matilda debacle, I decided to just bag the whole thing and head for home. As I was tooling along Rte 322, she called to say the games were over and they were headed for the bus. There was really no way for us to hook up. I told her I'd meet her at Hempfield when the bus brought them home.

And that's what I did.Still hadn't seen a rugby game. Rugby 2 - Margaret 0. Ah but that was about to change. I did get to one yesterday. I'll write about that in another post. Olivia got hurt.
