Old Baby Magazine

I was searching through my Rubbermaid bin full of old photographs and came across this baby rearing magazine from 1939. Obviously, my mother either purchased it or was given it shortly after I was born in 1938. She didn't know anything about taking care of a newborn and was scared spitless. I'm sure she searched for all the help she could get. She tried nursing but that was falling out of favor in those days. The new 'modern' idea was that a bottle fed baby was healthier in some way. It sure did release a woman from being on call every few hours and I think that might have been the attraction.

Anyway, I thought I'd scan an article every few days and post it here. I love the ads. So 30's. The magazine only cost 15 cents. I have no idea what that would be in 2009. A lot more, I'm sure. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I have.

Thanks for sharing that. It's interesting to see that comment about the Grandmothers caring for the babies. Seems we have come full circle as more and more Grandmothers are taking care of children so the parents can work. Love the ads too!
