Summer is slipping away. It seems like it was just Memorial Day last week. Now, Labor Day is coming at us fast and sure. And the kids all go back to school before that weekend. In fact, the schools are busy now with teachers getting their classrooms and work schedules in order and various sports teams in full practice mode. Naturally, the older I get, the faster these seasons flash by. Just when I would like it to slow down a bit.
Fast pitch softball season came to an end for us this past Sunday. The Razorbacks had a championship game against the Stingers over in Elizabethtown. Olivia wore her uniform but she couldn’t play, of course. The bunion surgery was only a few days before. She’s wearing a surgical boot and is using crutches to keep her weight off the foot.
We didn’t get to stay for the whole game. A nasty thunderstorm came up. Lots of black clouds & big lightning. The ump halted the game for awhile to see what Mother Nature was going to do. It was in the 6th inning and the Stingers were ahead 2-1. I have a feeling the game was called and they were the winners. We left before the rain arrived, but it wasn’t long before I felt like I was driving through a car wash. It was hosing down something fierce!
I’ve been knitting on a pair of fingerless mittens for Jess. She and I don’t like the same colors. So, it was a bit difficult to choose something for her. I got a nice variegated yellow-green-blue 100% wool by Ella Rae Classic Print. It has a lovely hand to it. Not stiff & scratchy like cheaper wool. And it’s non-striping. This seems to be the rage right now because so many people are knitting socks and want the stripes without having to use several skeins of yarn. This yarn is just randomly colored splotches. I only have the thumb to do on the 2nd mitten and I’ll be done. I’m wondering if there’s enough to make a matching beret. I may try it. Karen Mason’s “Gemma’s Beret” would be nice. I can see that on Jess.
The weather has been so mild this summer. Makes me wonder what winter will bring our way. It’s August and I was mightily tempted to turn on the furnace early yesterday morning. Instead, I dug out my sweat jacket and put that on for awhile. We’ve only had a couple of intense-in-the-90’s hot periods. I like this much better.
