A Different Autumn

The weather has not been what I would call autumnal weather this year. The weather gurus say it's because of the late warmth and not much rain. Usually the leaves are glorious and reaching their peak about now. Not this year. The trees just look a bit rusty. There is the odd tree in full color here and there. But even they aren't too pretty. And it's been raining fairly heavily and steadily since late Thursday night/early Friday morning. It's stopped for now and should clear up this afternoon.

Poor Olivia. Her football team had an away game last night against Reading High School. The JV kids have to suit up and go to these games even though they won't get to play. It was hosing down last night. I watched Football Friday Night at 11:30. A local show that covers all the games for the night. Many games were postponed to this afternoon, Sunday afternoon or Monday night. The few that were played were a horrible mess. There is no way any of the teams could play well in that sort of driving rain and muddy fields. Not all the schools have astro turf. I'm sure O was frozen before it was over. I was hoping that the sidelined players have ponchos but don't know for sure.

We were supposed to go to Shippensburg for the last softball tournament this morning. Yesterday afternoon, Phyllis got a call from the coach. The fields were under water at Shippensburg and all games for today were postponed till Sunday. Which means a very long day for everybody as all the games will be played tomorrow till finish. Oh well. I'm taking my blankie and other warm things. The forecast is for clear and cool.

Last Sunday, October 21, was Shannon's 23rd birthday. Where did those years go? She chose Red Lobster as the place for her dinner out. A family tradition. Her sweetie, Mike, was invited. Of course. They are the cutest couple. Amy, Gregory and Austin were also invited. And Mike's parents whom we hadn't met. They are terrific. We all seemed to meld together effortlessly. As if we'd known each other forever. None of that awkwardness that can happen when the parents meet each other. A good time was had by all. Too bad that the food was awful. Red Lobster used to have good food but it has sure gone downhill in recent years. I had a grilled lobster and shrimp plate. The lobster was a split tail of some tiny variety. About the size of a crayfish, actually. The shrimp was tasteless. About the time I was done eating, I noticed that Phyllis had vegetables with her same-as-mine order. Huh? The waitress apologized and said she forgot to put them on my plate. Also, we sat for about 10 minutes before we were even acknowledged by her. Not good service no matter how pleasant she was. Oh well. My birthday dinner will be somewhere else.

Mike gave Shannon an iPod Nano. It is so cute. Very slender and small. Not much bigger than a credit card. But it holds tons of stuff. I'd love to have one to listen to books. However, I have many other things that I need ahead of spending big bucks on something like that.

One other thing. We had a block party on October 20. A cul-de-sac party really. It was just for the neighbors in our little circle. Pot luck. It was the first time we'd done that and it was very nice. The guy across the street has a serious grill and he cooked hot dogs, hamburgers and chicken. There were no children a none live back here. However, my next door neighbor brought out their white German Shepherd, Rocket. He is so sweet. I had put Cocker Spaniel, Bella, in her crate. But went to get her as she and Rocket love to play. This caused others to bring out their dogs. The grill guy and his wife have 2 miniature dachshunds. So cute. Another neighbor has 3 teeny dogs of mixed breed. Like peke-a-poos. I think one weighs only a pound. They were cute also, but a bit too small for me. Bella is the perfect size, IMNSHO.
